Gordon-Booth Launches Mentoring Program

12/20/2016

PEORIA, IL – State Rep. Jehan Gordon-Booth, D-Peoria, is working with local community leaders to create a mentoring program for girls in their junior and senior years of high school. The program, Annie’s Girls, in honor of Gordon-Booth’s mother and community activist, will pair young women in the community with professional women from across the community.

“My mother and many other women helped me navigate through high school as I made decisions about where to college, what career path I wanted to follow and many other challenges,” Gordon-Booth said. “I wouldn’t have been able to have accomplish what I have if it wasn’t for the support and encouragement from the women around me. Annie’s Girls provides high school girls in our community the opportunity to connect with professional women who faced many of the same challenges.”

Gordon-Booth will be announcing details of this program on Tuesday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. at her office, located at 300 W. War Memorial Drive in Peoria. She will be joined by mentors including Peoria Councilwoman Beth Jensen; Judge Alicia Washington; Dr. Rita Ali, Vice President of Diversity, International & Adult Education at Illinois Central College; Meghan Lundeen, Communications Manager at Caterpillar, Inc.; and Kristen Kern, owner of Pink Sugar Boutique. Any young women interested in applying must submit an application by Jan. 10, 2017.

“Annie’s Girls provides high school girls in our community the opportunity to connect with professional women who faced many of the same challenges,” said Gordon-Booth. “I am very excited to see the relationship between these young ladies and our mentors grow.”
